Abandoned houses in Providence settlement

Two third of apartment buildings are empty. There is no heating there; windows are nailed up. Sometimes Chukchi families get settled in some of the buildings. Normally they pick an apartment on the top floor. They make a hole in the ceiling for the fire and use apartments next door as restrooms. In spring, when their part of the building starts stinking past all bearing they move to the other side of it.

During perestroyka more than a half of Russian contract soldiers fled to the European part of the country. They did it because of hunger and cold (sometimes fuel would end in the middle of winter and heating would get cut off). Within recent ten years population of Chukotka has halved.
